Papers of writer, Congregationalist, and later Spiritualist Alonzo Eliot Newton of Boston and Lowell, Mass. and Portland, Maine, includes letters written by Newton to his wife Sarah Jane Emery Newton, 1842-49, and a disbound scrapbook kept by Newton, 1840-80. Letters pertain to their courtship before marrying in 1845, religious theory and discussions (mostly Christian), church attendance, Newton's writing, time spent with family and friends, social events, and other daily activities. Scrapbook includes poetry and clippings of articles and letters to editors pertaining to Christianity and Spiritualism written by Newton.
